So, on March 13th, it was time to see my OB/GYN, Dr. Keene, I was 11.5 weeks along. I have been seeing her every year since I moved to Roanoke and really like her and her nurse. So, the appointment was at 3pm, so we left work for the day and headed to appointment, again, arriving very early. We were pleasantly surprised to be called back early, before 3pm even! But, it went downhill from there. We sat in the sub-waiting area for over an hour and finally discovered Dr. Keene was running over an hour behind! So, finally after 4pm, we were called back to the exam room. She came in and chatted with us for a few minutes and then conducted an internal exam and said all looked good. Then, she got out the Doppler and listened for the heartbeat. She said if she didn’t find the heartbeat, no big deal, she would send me for an ultrasound right away. Well, she found it in about 2 seconds, 160s, loud and clear.
Well, funny story. We were pretty confident she was gonna find it because we had been listening to it for a week. After doing a good bit of reading and talking to some other moms, we rented our own Doppler with a heartbeat display and had easily been finding the heartbeat every night at bedtime, normally in the 170s! It is so reassuring to hear it! Although, I didn’t tell Dr. Keene, but I will next time! So, then she answered questions, talking about the future appointments and sent us on our way! She told us to stop by the appointment desk and make about three more appointments.
So, we left the office and immediately called our families and shared the good report. Then, I spent about the next week calling and emailing everyone all over to share our news. Of course, most of you were not the least bit surprised and had been waiting for this announcement from us, however, a few were shocked to just be learning the news at 12 weeks! I know, I was silly, but it just felt so much better sharing the news after seeing the actual doctor and being at this later stage of the early stages!
Oh, also, we got home that evening to discover that they broke ground on the house, so as my daddy put it, “We had a red letter day!”
So, I go back on April 12th for a pretty uneventful appointment, weight check, heartbeat check and just to see how I am feeling. Then, on May 10th, at 830am, we have the BIG ultrasound. I will be two days shy of 20 weeks. That is the day we will attempt to find out the sex of the baby. We are supposed to bring a videotape and will get to take a video of the ultrasound home with us. So, we just hope this little guy or girl cooperates, because you all know what a PLANNER that I am, so we need to find out what we are having!!!!! Then, the next appointment after that is June 2nd and I will be 23 weeks, hard to believe!
